報告簡介：

Previous studies have typically treated ostensible speech acts as routine forms of ostensible refusal, rather than examining them as a distinct phenomenon deserving focused analysis. To address this gap, the present study centers on self-directed ostensible criticisms (SOCs) occurring in gift-giving interactions in A Dream of Red Mansion, exploring their criticizable types, pragmatic functions, and cultural associations within the context of Chinese society. The findings reveal that: SOCs fall into five types: intentional self-deprecation of one’s status, intentional devaluation of the gift, breaches of etiquette, imposition on others, and presupposing others’ disdain, among which intentional self-deprecation of one’s status is the most prevalent. Beyond literal criticisms, SOCs fulfill four pragmatic functions in gift-giving interactions: Constructing a positive self-image, enhancing interpersonal rapport, reinforcing authority, and subtly flattering others. Confucian values of “li” (ritual propriety), and “he” (harmony), jointly shape indirect, socially attuned communication strategies.

報告人簡介：

袁周敏，南京大學大學外語部/外國語學院教授，中國語言戰略研究中心研究員。南京大學語用學專業博士；兩站博士后經歷（浙江大學 話語與傳播；南京大學 社會學），博士生導師。主要從事語用學與話語研究，圍繞“文化多樣性與多元文化共生”，在基于中國文化的身份建構與語用學知識體系建構研究、對外話語體系建構與國家形象研究、語言與社會治理研究方面展開工作。主持在研國家社科重點項目1項，完成國家社科一般項目、教育部人文社科項目、中國博士后特別資助各1項，出版專著3部，發表論文80余篇。為The International Encyclopedia of Language and Social Interaction撰寫英文詞條“Online News”。先后入選江蘇省“333高層次人才培養工程”和江蘇省社科英才。中國大學慕課在線開放課程“語言與生活：語用學導論”“語言科學與藝術”負責人；中國邏輯學會語用學專業委員會副主任。
